Record-Breaking Lottery Winner Blew $257.6m In 8 Years Before He Died

Scottish lottery winner Colin Weir blew record-breaking $257.6m in 8 years before his death. He was the UK’s biggest lottery winner when he cashed in on the prize.

A Scottish man, who along with his wife, was the record-breaking winner for almost a decade, spent around $131,000 a week across the final eight years of his life. Colin Weir from North Ayrshire, Scotland, won a record-breaking $257.6 million. He was the winner of one of the largest EuroMIllions jackpots before his death in 2019, new documents revealed.

When the dad-of-two died he had a $12,400 stake in Irn-Bru and around $25,000 invested in Greggs. Colin, who died aged 71, shared around $50m with his friends and family as well as donating generously to charity.

Weir, a former cameraman married to a nurse, bought a 55 percent share in Glasgow’s Partick Thistle Football Club, as he had been a lifelong supporter.

Colin gave a five-figure sum to help pay for a prosthetic leg for a boy who had cancer.

Colin made a $3.1m investment, and his shares equated to $337k, which helped set up the Thistle Weir Youth Academy and a section of Firhill Stadium was named the Colin Weir Stand. In 2014 he also contributed millions to the SNP party and backed the pro-independence campaign.

Along with a $6 million home he reportedly spent millions more to renovate, Weir also snapped up three prized racing thoroughbreds, including an Irish mare named If You Say Run.

The lottery curse reared its head in 2018, when he divorced his wife, Chris, after nearly four decades of marriage — and she took much of his fortune, according to The Independent.

He lived in his $1.36m seafront property in Ayr, which he bought in June 2018 following the end of his relationship. The five-bedroomed house was the second that he bought, after signing over ownership of a $4.4m mansion, Frognal House, near Troon, to his ex-wife.

Colin passed away suddenly after suffering from sepsis and kidney injury, and had kept a petty cash box in case of sudden emergencies. His will shows that he had furniture, jewellery and artworks valued at around $263,000, as well as four cars.
